The Fall Roundtable on Cybersecurity for Not for Profits was held on Tuesday, December 1, 2015.
Two experts in the field led the session:
- Joseph M. Lawlor, Associate Managing Director of K2 Intelligence New York. Before joining K2 Intelligence Joseph served as a Special Agent in the Cyber Branch of the New York Office (NYO) of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where he was a lead incident responder and investigator of computer intrusions. You may email Joe at jlawlor@k2intelligence.com and phone 917 243 7712.
- Mark W. Schleisner is owner of nycBizTek Consulting, a firm that resolves technical, workflow and cybersecurity issues. He has depth of experience with not-for-profits, such as the American Museum of Natural History and the Mt. Sinai Continuum Health System. You may email Mark at mark@nycbiztek.com and phone as 917-837-1972.
This illuminating discussion made the attendees go home and change passwords, be more cautious with email and generally become much more aware of the cyber threats to home and business.
As the attendees said:
- An important part of Board members’ duty is to ensure that their organization is cyber-secure.
- It is critical to conduct a comprehensive cyber-security audit on an annual, if not more frequent, basis.
- We can be used as a means to target others. The evening made me realize why anyone is vulnerable. I may not be the end goal, but a means to target others. Like using my apt to climb into my neighbor’s window.
- The idea that if you even add one or two characters to your password that are NOT letters or numbers it makes it much more complicated to hack. It’s not so hard to make kittycat into Kitty*Kat1
