Learn about three fascinating areas and how local communities are handling the pandemic during this interactive webinar. Our panelists join us from YASC partners Instituto Floresta Viva in Brazil, Yspaniola in Dominican Republic, and Instituto Nueva Escuela in Puerto Rico. After a brief presentation by each panelist, you will have the opportunity to join a separate breakout room to discuss the situation in a particular community in more depth.
This webinar supports the Yale Alumni Service Corps (YASC) mission to promote mutual cross-cultural awareness and sustainable development in under-served communities. We do this by bringing Yale alumni, family, and friends to work with people in communities throughout the world – via the arts, education and sports, health, and economic development – to inspire hope and produce meaningful change in the lives of the people we serve.
Amy Porter: Amy is Yspaniola’s executive director. She is passionate about community-led development and greatly enjoys overseeing Yspaniola’s education programming, which employs local teachers and classroom assistants to provide high-quality, literacy-focused education to 160 students in the community of Batey Libertad.
Paulo Sanjines Barreiro ’12 MESc: Paulo is a liaison to Floresta Viva, an organization that brings sustainable economic alternatives to small agricultural producers in protected areas. He’s also the founder of Cachoeira Travel, an innovative social enterprise that aims to promote cultural and technological exchange between local communities, students, researchers, and other professionals from Brazil and around the world.
Nerialis Vasquez: Nerialis is a volunteer and special project operational structure VISTA for Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE). As an independent 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, INE is dedicated to improving Puerto Rican students’ academic and socio-emotional outcomes through the implementation of Montessori education in the public school setting.
Perry Sayles ’88: Perry is currently chair of the Yale Alumni Service Corps Advisory Board and a member of YASC since 2016. He has been on five YASC trips and was the trip producer for the March 2019 trip to the Dominican Republic in partnership with Yspaniola. Perry has his own interior design practice.
