Establishing Strategy — Vivien Hoexter, H2Growth Strategies

The Strategic Fundraising Plan: A Roadmap for Success

  • Developing a Plan
  • What are you offering
  • Who will support you
  • How do you build relationships over time
  • Who are your best partners
  • Who they are partnering with (board, staff or other) in the quest to raise funds

In Establishing Fundraising Strategy, the participants learned that having a written fundraising plan is the #1 predictor of fundraising success. Research has now proven this. Fundraising plans, particularly for smaller organizations, do not have to be complicated. They can be a simple spreadsheet with activities underneath the months of the year across the top. What is important is that they be written down. For organizations over $1 million a year in revenue, plans can and should be more complex, with objectives and strategies for each major income stream, i.e. corporations, foundations, individuals and governments.

Setting the fundraising goal is always challenging and is often done from the top down rather than the bottom up. Goal-setting should start with last year’s results, by donor, and build from there, adding prospects and expectations of their giving to ensure that income continues to grow. Evaluating the plan is also critical, because unless organizations learn from their events, mailings, web appeals and solicitations, they will not maximize their giving.
