This year’s New York City site for The Architect Is IN — an international project held as part of the annual Yale Day of Service  — offered three area nonprofits donated professional architecture, planning, and design advice.

Among the dozen volunteers brainstorming at Hart Howerton’s airy midtown space were School of Architecture alums from the classes of 1973 to 2019 (among them interior designer Dale B. Cohen, who launched the initiative in 2014, and architect Tom Doremus, a familiar YANA face).

Over six hours, schemes were developed for design improvements at East Harlem’s Pa’lante Community Garden; increasing capacity at Westchester’s Trinity Independent Assembly of God Church; and a proposal for innovative audio production facilities — permitting others to view and hear the creative process as it takes place — for Manhattan artistic accelerator NYFMF (New York Film Music Foundation Inc.) to use in grant applications.

“I’ve always been passionate about community engagement,” says Jessica Elliott, M.Arch ’16. “This event allowed me to interact with other design professionals and the community in a more impactful way.”
